Continuous School Improvement

Welcome to Continuous School Improvement!

We, the administration, faculty and staff of Osan American High School, are committed to continuously improving student achievement. In DoDDS schools, this effort falls within the Continuous School Improvement (CSI) process and is monitored through AdvancEd, the organization through which all DoDDS schools are accredited. To be truly successful in our CSI process, we recognize that we need to work hand-in-hand with the community we serve. To that end, this particular page of our school's website is dedicated to keeping our community informed of everything related to our efforts to improve student achievement.

 Mission Statement & Guiding Principles

Mission Statement:

Osan American High School, working in partnership with its community, provides educational opportunities that emphasize commitment, responsibility, and high level skills to empower students to succeed in a global society.

Guiding Principles:

  • Encourage the fortitude to complete a task to one's best ability.
  • Promote an understanding that learning is a function of effort through students' active involvement in the learning process.
  • Provide high-level skills through rigor, allowing students to think critically through any situation.
  • Empower students to be lifelong learners and provide tools to encourage self-confidence so that they can succeed in all aspects of a multicultural society.

 School Improvement Goals & Essences

Goal 1:

All students will increase their ability to evaluate what they read across the curriculum.

Essence: Students will analyze content area vocabulary in order to deepen their understanding of text.

Goal 2:

All students will improve analytical writing across the curriculum.
Essence: Students will be able to write an orginal analysis of a text or process that demonstrates understanding in a clear, concise, and logical manner.

 Interventions

To achieve our two CSI goals, we have chosen one intervention per goal that every teacher will use on a regular basis during instruction. After considerable research into how best to approach these goals, we settled on the two following interventions. [Click on Modified Frayer Model or 6 Traits of Writing to link to more information about the two interventions.]

Goal 1 Intervention:

Modified Frayer Model with emphasis on Morphemes, Suffixes, and Prefixes.

This is a graphic organizer with areas to complete for the word, definition, characteristics, examples, and non-examples. We added a morphemes/prefixes/suffixes section to the model, which encourages the students to delve into the basic elements of the assigned vocabulary word or term. Goal 2 Intervention:

 6 Traits of Writing

We use a slight modification of NWREL's 6+1 Trait Writing framework. According to NWREL, it "is a powerful way to learn & use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing as well as create a common vision of what 'good' writing looks like. Teachers & students can use the model to pinpoint areas of strength & weakness as they continue to focus on improved writing."

For SY 08-09, we will implement the first three traits of Ideas, Organization, & Word Choice.

For SY 09-10, we will implement the last three traits of Sentence Fluency, Voice, & Conventions.
